The mission of the World Organisation is to be the united voice and world advocate of democratic local self-government, promoting its values, objectives and interests, through cooperation between local governments, and within the wider international community.

To achieve this mission, the World Organisation shall pursue the following objectives:

  1. To promote strong and effective democratic local self-government throughout the world;
  2. To promote unity and cooperation amongst members;
  3. To ensure the effective political representation of local government to the international community, in particular the United Nations and its agencies;
  4. To be the worldwide source of key information and intelligence regarding local government;
  5.  To be the worldwide source of learning, exchange and capacity-building, supporting the establishment and strengthening of free and autonomous local governments and their national associations;
  6.  To promote economic, social, cultural, vocational and environmental development and service to the population based on the principles of good governance, sustainability and social inclusion;
  7. To promote race and gender equality, and to combat all forms of discrimination that are illegal with regard to international law, and/or illegitimate in relation to the values and policies of the organisation;
  8. To be a strong democratic organisation, reflecting in its composition and functioning the diversity of the local spheres of governance;
  9. To promote decentralised cooperation and international cooperation between local governments and their associations;
  10. To promote twinning and partnerships as a means for mutual learning and friendship between peoples;
  11. To develop policies, programmes and initiatives within the framework of the World Organisation’s mission, values and objectives, this implies seeking appropriate means to implement them, within the internal rules of the organisation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

 UCLG-MEWA Executive Bureau and the Committee on Culture and Tourism Convene in Izmir

As per the Article 35 of UCLG-MEWA Constitution and the Article 9 of UCLG-MEWA Bylaws, UCLG-MEWA Executive Bureau is convened twice a year. Therefore, the first meeting of the renewed Executive Bureau (renewed on 9-10 July in Amman, Jordan) will be held on 6 December 2019 under the auspices of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.

 6TH UCLG CONGRESS WILL GATHER IN DURBAN

From 11 to 15 November 2019, the city of Durban, South Africa, will host the UCLG Congress, organized every three years to renew the Presidency of the UCLG World Organization. The UCLG Congress, which will be holding its 6th edition this year, will elect the Presidency for the 2019-2022 period and will discuss the global agendas of the cities with the participation of local and regional government leaders from all around the world.

 International Forum on Local Solutions to Migration and Displacement

International Forum on Local Solutions to Migration and Displacement, currently being co-organized by United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia section (UCLG-MEWA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality (Turkey) and World Academy for Local Authorities and Democracy (WALD), will be held in Gaziantep, Turkey from 26 to 27 November 2019.
