UCLG-MEWA Covid-19 Call for Solidarity

Dear Local Government Representatives,

As UCLG-MEWA, we would like to extend our thanks and a message of solidarity to all local governments making an effort to continue their activities in these challenging conditions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Local governments, as the closest level of government to the people, have an important share in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Heavily affected by this situation like all other government units, local governments continue to provide basic public services without any interruption, while, at the same time, introducing additional measures to fight against the pandemic and put in place initiatives for preventive health services.

We receive various calls for solidarity and messages from our members as a result of this pandemic, which has affected the whole world.  As the umbrella organization of local governments in the Middle East and West Asia (MEWA) region, we invite all of our members to share their experiences and collaborate with one another during this troubled process.

In the spirit of decentralized cooperation, which is an integral element of cooperation between countries, we believe that all of our member local governments will give the best examples of intercity solidarity.

We express our belief that we will achieve healthy days together and pay our respects.

UCLG-MEWA and UN-Habitat Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) are organizing a webinar on “Empowering Local Communities for Inclusive COVID-19 Recovery” and it will be held via Zoom on Monday, 26 October, 2020 at 10:00 (CEST).
