UCLG-MEWA Committee on Urban Mobility

Introduction to Urban Mobility

The increasing urbanization leads cities to face traffic and high rate of CO2 emissions making mobility one of the most important and complex problems for local and regional governments. Therefore, in order to keep their territory attractive and competitive, city leaders and local administrations will need to adopt new policies and find innovative solutions to achieve sustainable urban mobility.

In order to answer these challenges, UCLG World Organization established the Committee on Urban Mobility aiming at leading new initiatives and supporting local governments. Since its establishment, the Committee has been the platform where local governments can share good practices and problems and support each other by getting recognition from their respective national governments and from the international community.

Why UCLG-MEWA established the Committee on Urban Mobility?

In parallel with UCLG World Organization’s Committees, UCLG-MEWA has launched a regional committee on Urban Mobility. The Committee is to be a platform where members will work to strengthen cooperation in the field of urban mobility within the MEWA region. It will provide a place where local governments can share best practices and knowledge and support each other in getting recognition from their respective national governments and from the international community.

The first meeting of UCLG-MEWA Committee on Urban Mobility was held on 18 December 2015 in Istanbul Congress Center, within TRANSIST 2015, the 8th International Transportation Technologies Symposium and Fair.

During this first meeting, the Committee elected its president and co-presidents and adopted a program of activities that are presented bellow.

The Presidency of the Committee on Urban Mobility is conducted by Istanbul Electricity, Tramway and Tunnel General Management (IETT).

The Committee has 5 Co-Presidents, which are members of UCLG-MEWA:

- Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality (Turkey)
- Malatya Metropolitan Municipality (Turkey)
- Union of Municipalities of Dannieh (Lebanon)
- Nablus Municipality (Palestine)
- Greater Amman Municipality (Jordan)
