14th ANNIVERSARY of UCLG-MEWA

Shared Commitment, Strong Action In our rapidly urbanized world, it is both our biggest challenge and greatest opportunity to ensure the establishment of a more equitable, balanced and sustainable urban development. If we dedicate our experience and resources for this aim in a collective manner, we have opportunity to achieve “leaving no one behind,” as suggested by the Sustainable Development Goals till 2030.

When representatives of local governments the world over gathered in Paris, France on 5 May 2004 for UCLG Constitutive General Assembly, to create a new unified world organization of local governments bearing in mind these goals, they adopted the UCLG Constitution, which was followed by the adoption of UCLG-MEWA Constitution by UCLG-MEWA Constitutive General Assembly.

From that time on, conducting its activities to be the united voice and world advocate of democratic local self-government, UCLG-MEWA currently represents over 250 local and regional governments in 15 counties in our region. During this process, it has contributed a lot to the acknowledgement of local authorities as the major actors in the definition of the international agendas.

And, today, this huge family celebrates 14th anniversary of the adoption of its constitution, which lays the foundation for all its activities and efforts.

As UCLG-MEWA, we are proud of being a part of this dedicated movement aiming to promote strong and effective democratic local self-government throughout the MEWA region and the world. Our work will be enriched with every new member of this family.
