United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia Section (UCLG-MEWA) held the 1st Meeting of its Committee on Environment under the auspices of Malatya Metropolitan Municipality on 13 November 2015, and elected its president and co-presidents. Herewith, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality was elected as the President; Malatya Metropolitan Municipality, Konya Metropolitan Municipality and Seferihisar Municipality were elected as the Co-Presidents of the Committee.
Following the decision of committee members, the 2nd Meeting of UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment will be hosted by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality on 30-31 May 2016.
The UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment aims to be a platform where local authorities and development partners can exchange their experiences and develop innovative solution for an inclusive and sustainable development.
The 2nd Meeting of UCLG-MEWA Committee on Environment is planned to be a part of a comprehensive event with important discussions concerning the Post-COP21 process and Habitat III: Housing and Sustainable Urban Development Conference which will be held in October 2016. In line with this information, we believe that Paris Agreement touching upon the solutions for climate change, which was signed after the COP21 process and Habitat III Conference defining the next 20 years of urban agenda, should not concern only national governments but also the local governments which are the closest level of government to the citizens.
