Local Governments Commission of Climate Shura (Council), established by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change of Turkey, held three meetings in January. The first of the online meetings was held on January 7, the second on January 12, and the third on January 26, 2022.
In line with the net zero carbon emission target of local governments for 2053 and the green development policy, the Shura convened with all stakeholders to create a roadmap that includes the priority actions of the organizations. Local governments commission stated the following priorities, including, but not limited to, urban infrastructure and nature-based solutions, risk and disaster management, and loss and damage in the fight against climate change at the local level. Along with the policy of fighting climate change, it is also planned to determine sectoral strategic targets to contribute to the regulation to be made on climate change, determine basic policies for different sectors, and create a roadmap.
UCLG-MEWA Secretary General Mehmet Duman, General Coordinator Salim Korkmaz, and Projects and Committees Coordinator Melis Şahin attended the meeting and contributed in relation to issues such as globalization of local agendas and access of local governments to expertise in thematic areas. The fourth meeting will be physically held in Ankara, Turkey.
