“International City Councils and Cities Congress” will be held on 14 – 15 April 2016 in Istanbul Aydın University’s Florya Campus with the collaboration of World Academy for Local Government and Democracy (WALD), United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia Section (UCLG-MEWA), and Istanbul Aydın University. Its Preparotory Meeting was held on February 2nd 2016 in Istanbul Aydın University.
During the preparatory meeting, in which representatives from UCLG-MEWA, WALD and Istanbul Aydın University’s Congress Planning and Coordination Committee participated, it was decided; to form a jury for “City Councils Best Practices Competition” to be organized within the framework of the program, to review the congress’ program, to determine opening conference’s theme and its workflow plan.
“International City Councils and Cities Congress”, in which researches and projects for city councils and cities, that are made by international researchers from various fields, academicians, representatives of local governments, NGOs and officials from institutions that work on cities, shall be reviewed, aims at enabling theoretical and practical information to harmonize on the same platform.
The program, in which past and recent conditions of the City Councils will be discussed and predictions of their future conditions will be analyzed, consists of two platforms, namely academic and thematic. Academic platform will be held under 6 main topics: “Local Democracy and City Councils”, “Functionality and Sustainability of City Councils”, “City Councils and Assemblies (Women, Youth, Disabled People, and Children Assemblies)”, “Citizenship and Urban Consciousness”, “Relation between City Councils and Civil Society”, “City Councils and Reputation Management”. Thematic platform aims at gathering academicians, representatives of local governments and other council representatives to discuss city councils. Within this framework; “Urbanite Rights”, “Urban Problems and Solutions”, “Green Development”, “Integration of Disadvantageous Groups into the City”, “Good Governance in the City” topics were determined to be discussed.
