October 11 has been celebrated as the “International Day of the Girl” with the decision taken by the United Nations member countries since 2012.
Taken by the proposal of Turkey, Canada and Peru; it is stated in the decision that it is important to support and strengthen girls along with making investments for them, which would also prevent discrimination and violence against girls and enable them to benefit from human rights accurately and effectively, in terms of achieving “United Nations Millennium Development Goals” and participation of girls to the decisions of which they will be affected. Moreover in the decision, it is highlighted that families and societies have a great importance on strengthening girls.
As UCLG-MEWA, we celebrate International Day of the Girl, 11 October by wishing girls to be stronger in the society, get rid of every kind of discrimination and harassment, benefit from all the rights equally.
