Yücel Yılmaz, Mayor of Balıkesir, Ambassador for UCLG Pact for Future of Government and President of Union of Municipalities of Türkiye and Turan Hançerli, Mayor of Avcılar attended the Sustainable Development High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) held in New York, the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) on 10-19 July.

Yücel Yılmaz, who took part as a speaker at the forum, said, “Our sustainable efforts need to go beyond our organizations. He underlined the importance of sustainability and said, “Local governments lead the development processes of their regions to ensure strong partnerships and successful implementation of the goals.”

While discussing the importance of sustainability and social welfare, Turan Hançerli also emphasized that measures should be taken due to disasters that are likely to happen. In his speech, he also talked about “Development from the Bottom Up.” He stated that Avcılar Municipality expanded this project’s scope to “Development at the Bottom and from the Bottom Up.” Thus, Avcılar declared that they defend the welfare of the people of Avcılar under all circumstances.

“Today, we emphasized that development must be local and must be in place.”

Turan Hançerli emphasized socioeconomic welfare, health problems, and disaster resilience in his High-Level Political Forum speech. He said: With the Avcılar Urban Transformation Model, we have secured the future of green and livable neighborhoods.”

Subsequently, Yücel Yılmaz continued his contacts with the United States and visited United Nations Permanent Representative Sedat Önal and UN-Habitat Executive Director Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
