United Cities and Local Governments the Middle East and West Asia Section (UCLG-MEWA) hosted Neşet Tarhan, Mayor of Mezitli and UCLG-MEWA Council Member, as part of UCLG-MEWA Local Government Talk Series entitled “The Role of Local Governments in the Fight Against Coronavirus and Normalization” on October 1, 2020.
Mayor Tarhan started his speech by mentioning some of the activities Mezitli Municipality had carried out during the pandemic and said that as a result of the long summer season, there was a partial increase in the number of cases. He added that long beach season turns Mezitli into a center of attraction. He further touched upon the importance of social assistance and solidarity. Mayor Tarhan also talked about their work in the field of education.
Highlighting historical and cultural values of Mezitli, he pointed out that the district of Mezitli had historically been a port district, and that the ancient ports needed to be unearthed today.
