UCLG-MEWA STRENGTHENS BONDS WITH JORDANIAN MUNICIPALITIES


In a testament to its commitment to fostering strong partnerships with Jordanian municipalities, the United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia Section (UCLG-MEWA) recently undertook a significant mission in Jordan. The mission, which took place from March 4th to March 7th, 2024, saw a series of engagements aimed at bolstering collaboration and addressing pressing local challenges. The main focus of the mission was the organization of a workshop on Climate and Human Mobility in the city of Salt, reflecting UCLG-MEWA’s dedication to addressing pertinent issues facing communities.

UCLG-MEWA and Jordanian Mayors Gathering in Madaba

On March 6th, an exclusive session convened Jordanian mayors, offering a unique platform for in-depth discussions. With over 20 mayors participating, the meeting facilitated comprehensive dialogues on municipal needs, challenges, and expectations from UCLG-MEWA. Discussions also revolved around outlining a roadmap for 2024, focusing on strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts for sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Throughout the session, mayors delved into the intricate dynamics of their cities, addressing pressing issues while emphasizing the importance of local governance. The exchange of ideas and shared commitment to effecting positive change underscored the significance of collaborative engagement in shaping the future of Jordan’s urban landscape. As the meeting concluded, a sense of optimism prevailed, driven by the collective resolve to overcome challenges and capitalize on opportunities for the betterment of municipalities across the region.

Visit to the City of Al Arida

The picturesque city of Al Arida provided an inspiring backdrop for dialogue and exchange, with Mayor Hisham Muhafaza warmly welcoming UCLG-MEWA delegates. Discussions on regional urban development highlighted the city’s potential, underscoring the significance of local leadership in driving progress.

Meeting at  Ministry of Local Administrations in Jordan

Meeting at the Ministry of Local Administrations in Jordan further solidified partnerships as UCLG-MEWA delegates engaged with Dr. Nidal Abu Orabi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Local Administrations in Jordan. Fruitful discussions ensued, focusing on strategies to enhance collaboration for the mutual benefit of municipalities across Jordan. Additionally, increasing the participation of Jordanian local governments at the global level was one of the main topics discussed in the meeting.

Visit to Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Jordan

Within the framework of workshops and events, UCLG-MEWA representatives paid a visit to Mr. Erdem Ozan, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Jordan. The meeting emphasized the significance of international cooperation in advancing local governance and sustainable development initiatives. It also provided an opportunity to lay the groundwork for increased cooperation between Jordanian and Turkish cities in the near future.

Reflecting on the mission, UCLG-MEWA emphasized its unwavering commitment to supporting Jordanian municipalities in addressing complex challenges and fostering inclusive, resilient communities.
