UCLG-MEWA, which carries out its activities in the Middle East and West Asia region, is deeply concerned by the recent situation in Yemen.
As a result of the political crisis broke out in Yemen in 2014, many people have lost their lives and many others had to leave their homes. Currently, Yemeni people have to struggle not only with the political crisis but also with starvation and cholera epidemic.
According to the latest data of World Health Organization(WHO), almost 2000 people have lost their lives in Yemen due to cholera so far, and another 375.000 suspected cases of cholera have been observed. In addition, 60 percent of the population in Yemen don’t have access to safe food, due to the famine in the country.
These kind of human tragedies are intolerable in the 21st century. In this sense, it is the primary responsibility of the international community to provide decent food and clean water to civilians, as well as to stop the cholera epidemic in Yemen. As UCLG-MEWA General Secretariat, we call all leaders of local governments, NGOs, international relief foundations and the relevant agencies of the UN to act in solidarity with the people of Yemen and to stop this human tragedy.
