VISIT BY MAYOR OF TUNIS


The Mayor of Tunis and the accompanying delegation visited UCLG-MEWA General Secretariat on 14 March 2019, right after participating in the session on “Sustainability in Smart Cities” moderated by Mehmet Duman, UCLG-MEWA Secretary-General, and organized within the context of the World Cities’ Congress Istanbul 2019. The delegation, including Hadi Malik, Consul General of Tunisia in Istanbul; and Fawzi Haidari, Consul of Tunisian Economic and Cultural Affairs, made a consultation with UCLG-MEWA delegation on the local government relations between Turkey, Tunisia and neighboring countries. Tunisian delegation also received brief information about the activities of UCLG-MEWA.

In this gathering that representatives from Tunisia diplomatic missions and Tunisian mayors also attended, participants discussed local governments’ roles from the perspective of the importance of city diplomacy in international relations. This meeting provided an important platform to present a ground for establishing stronger relations between the cities as for the implementation of the global goals. Parties also noted the importance of the implementation of what is agreed on the papers and protocols. One another agenda of the meeting was Tunisian students living in Istanbul. Parties also discussed the possibility to organize a meeting for Tunisian students at the General Secretariat of UCLG-MEWA.
