3rd WORLD FORUM OF INTERMEDIARY CITIES TO BE HELD IN CUENCA, ECUADOR

Intermediary cities play a crucial role in advancing territorial cohesion, fostering rural-urban integration, and promoting human-scale development. Despite their significance, they have often been underrepresented in global agendas. The UCLG World Forum of Intermediary Cities aims to change this narrative by providing a dedicated platform for advocacy, collaboration, and innovative policy development.

The third edition of this important forum will be held in Cuenca, Ecuador, between 23-24 January 2025. Renowned for its sustainable and inclusive urban practices, Cuenca offers an ideal setting for discussions on the transformative potential of intermediary cities in addressing global challenges, including the climate crisis, ecological transition, and the redefinition of urban-rural relationships.

Building upon the achievements of the Chefchaouen Declaration (2018) and the Kütahya Declaration (2021), this edition will convene city leaders, international organizations, and key partners such as the OECD and UN-Habitat. Together, participants will collaborate on strategies to ensure resilient and inclusive futures. Through a participatory process, the forum will culminate in the adoption of a World Declaration, informed by regional and global consultations, and will outline a strategic roadmap for action.

UCLG-MEWA encourages its members to actively participate in this significant event, which represents a unique opportunity to showcase the contributions of intermediary cities to global development while shaping their future role in addressing pressing global challenges.
