In accordance with UCLG-MEWA’s targets of expanding its scope of activities for the 2025–2028 period and promoting an inclusive approach to local governance, Mayor in Charge of Avcılar Municipality, Atty. Yüksel Can paid an important visit to the UCLG-MEWA General Secretariat to further strengthen the cooperation. The visit also reflected UCLG’s mission to foster collaboration among local governments and municipalities in leading sustainable development efforts.
Atty. Yüksel Can was welcomed by UCLG-MEWA Secretary General Dr. Mehmet Duman, followed by a briefing on UCLG-MEWA’s global initiatives in cooperation with local governments, including dialogue
s that emphasize participation and inclusivity, as well as activities aimed at promoting good governance practices.
The meeting was attended by Avcılar Deputy Mayor Zekiye Kahraman, Director of Strategy Development Nalan Başaran Öztürk, Coordinator of Foreign Relations and Project Management Unit Deniz Ayaroğlu, as well as UCLG-MEWA General Coordinator Dr. Ali Murat Duman, R&D and Projects Coordinator Yehia Ibrahim, International Relations Coordinator Dr. Reem Abusamra, and Administrative and Financial Affairs Coordinator Yasemin Kurt. During the meeting, UCLG-MEWA Communication Coordinator Junaid Rafiq delivered a comprehensive presentation on the organizational structure, vision, and activities of both UCLG-MEWA and the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). Detailed information was shared about UCLG-MEWA’s ongoing projects and areas of activity, with particular emphasis on the role of the committees within the organization in contributing to local government policies.
One of the key agenda items during the meeting was the active roles Avcılar Municipality could assume and potential areas of cooperation in line with UCLG-MEWA’s inclusive local governance goals for the 2025–2028 period. The discussions focused on steps that could be taken to enhance Avcılar Municipality’s visibility and impact in both regional and global contexts.
