Experts Convene in Istanbul to Address Traffic Safety and Urban Mobility Challenges


The first edition of Disaster and Traffic Management: Academic and Applied Perspectives was held on 8 May 2025, in Istanbul University, organized by Istanbul University, Governorship of Istanbul, and Turkish Police Academy

The experts, stakeholders, and many government bodies gathered to exchange insights and practical strategies aimed at improving road safety and urban traffic systems across Türkiye.

The discussions placed strong emphasis on smart city initiatives and the critical role of effective legislation in mitigating traffic accidents, especially in densely populated metropolitan areas. Interactive sessions provided a dynamic platform to explore innovative solutions for building safer and more resilient road networks.

Dr. Ali Murat Duman, UCLG-MEWA General Coordinator, highlighted the key urban challenges, stressing the importance of expanding parking infrastructure while also reducing the overall number of vehicles in circulation. His remarks reflected a growing consensus around the need for integrated approaches that combine urban planning, technology, and behavioral change.

The event marked a significant step forward in fostering national dialogue on sustainable transportation and urban resilience, setting the stage for future collaborations between policymakers, academia, and local governments.
