MALAYSIA HOSTED THE 9TH SESSION OF THE WORLD URBAN FORUM


9th Session of the World Urban Forum took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with the participation of local government representatives from all around the world.

The Forum started with the Women’s Assembly, addressing to the gender equality in the New Urban Agenda. Speaking in the introductory session of the Assembly, Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), emphasized that “National development cannot be achieved without ensuring full participation of women in the public space.”

Representing the UCLG-MEWA; Mr. Mehmet Duman, Secretary General, and Mr. Barıs Timur, Project Officer, participated in the Forum. Secretary General Duman read the Local and Regional Governments Statement, one of the main reference documents of the Forum.

Secretary General Duman also delivered a speech on the New Urban Agenda, within the context of Intermediary Cities World Forum Preparatory Meeting, held on Saturday, 10 February.

As a result of the six-day Forum, the first report on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda will be drawn up.
