We are pleased to announce that the call for applications for the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture 2028 initiative is now open.
Aiming to promote cultural diversity across the Euro-Mediterranean region, strengthen intercultural dialogue, and enhance cooperation among
local and regional authorities, this prestigious initiative designates two cities as Mediterranean Capitals of Culture each year.
Scope:
Applicant cities are expected to submit a comprehensive one-year cultural programme that:
- Celebrates the cultural diversity of the Euro-Mediterranean region;
- Is coordinated by local authorities in cooperation with cultural institutions, schools, universities, and civil society organizations;
- Promotes both local cultural heritage and contemporary cultural and creative sectors;
- Encourages intercultural dialogue and international partnerships;
- Culminates in a major celebration on the Day of the Mediterranean (28 November).
Eligibility:
- Local or regional authorities located in a country of the Union for the Mediterranean, that have not previously been designated as a Mediterranean Capital of Culture & Dialogue.
