The Mediterranean Capitals of Culture 2028 initiative is now open


We are pleased to announce that the call for applications for the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture 2028 initiative is now open.

Aiming to promote cultural diversity across the Euro-Mediterranean region, strengthen intercultural dialogue, and enhance cooperation among
local and regional authorities, this prestigious initiative designates two cities as Mediterranean Capitals of Culture each year.

Scope:

Applicant cities are expected to submit a comprehensive one-year cultural programme that:

  • Celebrates the cultural diversity of the Euro-Mediterranean region;
  • Is coordinated by local authorities in cooperation with cultural institutions, schools, universities, and civil society organizations;
  • Promotes both local cultural heritage and contemporary cultural and creative sectors;
  • Encourages intercultural dialogue and international partnerships;
  • Culminates in a major celebration on the Day of the Mediterranean (28 November).

Eligibility:

  • Local or regional authorities located in a country of the Union for the Mediterranean, that have not previously been designated as a Mediterranean Capital of Culture & Dialogue.
