Training Program on VLR held in İzmir.


UNDP Türkiye organized a Training Program, ‘Voluntary Local Review of Sustainable Development Goals Performance Indicators, Data Standards, Monitoring and Assessment’ in İzmir on 20-22 July.

The training was held within the scope of the Local Government Reform Project (LAR III), sponsored by the European Union and aimed at preparing a customized guide for local governments in Türkiye regarding the VLR target and the Indicators. Melis Şahin, Coordinator of Committees and Projects Department, attended the event on behalf of UCLG-MEWA.

The training consisted of several themes, including the comparative international perspective on SDGs, preparation of VLRs, VLR target indicators data collection, and analysis. Stakeholder approach for effective data management, monitoring, and implementation of VLR preparation and evaluation.

The draft of the customized guide work was created by examining the reports of Sultanbeyli, Karatay, and İzmir, the first municipalities to prepare the VLR in Türkiye in 2021. UCLG-MEWA has been involved in the process since the beginning of the VLR work of all three cities and took part in the program as the leading institution of these studies to share the knowledge and experience gained from this report work carried out for the first time in the region.

In her presentation, Melis Şahin highlighted the approach of UCLG-MEWA toward the SDGs agenda, emphasizing the links between SDGs and the New Urban Agenda. She also stressed the role of UCLG-MEWA in training municipal staff and supervising the preparation of VLRs in İzmir Metropolitan, Sultanbeyli, and Karatay municipalities in Türkiye.
