TURKEY AND THE MEWA REGION PREPARING FOR THE FIRST VLR

Sultanbeyli Municipality is getting ready to be trailblazer in Turkey and also the MEWA region. The Voluntary Local Review (VLR), a process conducted in different parts of the world to follow up on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level, will be for the first time conducted in Turkey and the MEWA region, pioneered by Sultanbeyli Municipality.

Voluntary Local Review Reports (VLRs), as well as the Voluntary National Review Reports (VNRs) submitted by countries since 2016, have now become an important mechanism to monitor global goals. The reports, which show the reflection of the UN 2030 Agenda on the local level, make significant contributions to both national and international development efforts. Especially the data collected under various categories is of importance in terms of demonstrating the applicability of plans at the local level.

Following up closely on global municipal efforts, Sultanbeyli Municipality launched the preparations for the first Voluntary Local Review in Turkey and the MEWA region. UCLG-MEWA Secretariat, who came together with Hüseyin Keskin, Mayor of Sultanbeyli, and his delegation within the scope of the preparations carried out with the technical support of UCLG-MEWA, drew up the future roadmap for the report. In the next phase, Sultanbeyli Municipality, which is a member of the “Community of Practice” established within UCLG for Sustainable Development Goals, will meet with specialized institutions to determine the methodology of the report.
