UCLG-MEWA is represented by distinguished Ambassadors serving in key thematic areas, including Climate, Culture, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These Ambassadors embody our collective mission by strengthening representation, advancing leadership, and amplifying the voice of local and regional governments across the MEWA region.
In light of the decision taken during the UCLG-MEWA Congress on October 3, 2025, in Konya, Türkiye, we are pleased to announce the call for nominations for the UCLG-MEWA Ambassador for Governance, who will further strengthen leadership and representation in this priority area of UCLG-MEWA’s work.
The UCLG-MEWA Ambassador for Governance will contribute to advancing good governance, strengthening local democracy, promoting inclusive and participatory decision-making, and fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange among local and regional governments. The Ambassador will also help enhance the visibility and dissemination of governance-related practices, initiatives, and experiences at both the regional and international levels.
Duties of the Ambassador
The nominated Ambassador will lead and support activities that strengthen governance and the role of local and regional governments in the region’s sustainable development.
Through activities conducted in the field of governance, the Ambassador is expected to:

Promote inclusive, transparent, and accountable governance;

Encourage the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and good practices among UCLG-MEWA members;

Support citizen participation and inclusive approaches to local decision-making;

Foster cooperation and dialogue among local, regional, national, and international stakeholders;

Contribute to strengthening the institutional capacities of local and regional governments;

Advance multi-level governance and effective local government leadership;

Contribute to the dissemination of governance-related knowledge, practices, and policy experiences; and
-
Represent and promote UCLG-MEWA’s governance priorities on relevant regional and international platforms.
Through these activities, the Ambassador will help foster a more inclusive, participatory, responsive, and cooperative governance environment across the MEWA region, while strengthening the role and visibility of local and regional governments in governance and sustainable development.
Eligibility and Selection
Eligible candidates include elected officials or senior representatives of UCLG-MEWA member local and regional governments. Nominations may be submitted by member institutions or by candidates themselves, with the endorsement of their respective institution.
The eligible candidates are expected to be evaluated during the upcoming UCLG-MEWA Forum on Resilience, alongside the UCLG-MEWA Council and Executive Bureau Joint Meeting, which is planned to be held on 21–22 December 2026 in Trabzon, Türkiye.
