DR. MEHMET DUMAN SPOKE AT SUMMER ACADEMY ON MIGRATION AND RESILIENT CITIES

UCLG-MEWA Secretary General Dr. Mehmet Duman participated as a speaker in the program titled “Migration and Resilient Cities Summer Academy” organized by Gaziantep University’s Migration Institute on 17-22 July, with the invitation of Şahinbey Municipality.

In his speech, Dr. Mehmet Duman talked about the initiatives on migration that UCLG-MEWA has pioneered or is involved in. Afterward, he stated that UCLG-MEWA focuses on the concept of Resilience. Duman discussed the Trabzon Resilience Declaration signed at the UCLG-MEWA Forum on Resilience & Executive Bureau Meeting held in Trabzon. He touched upon the points on migration and refugees covered by the Trabzon Resilience Declaration.

“The story of GTFM started at the International Forum for Local Solutions to Migration and Displacement, held in Gaziantep in November 2019.”

Starting his remarks with the formation of the Global Task Force on Migration (GTFM), Dr. Mehmet Duman underlined the importance of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Systematic Migration and the Global Compact on Refugees. He emphasized the Gaziantep Declaration, Marrakech Mayors Declaration, and Lampedusa Charter in this context.

“As a Regional entity in the MEWA, we have aimed to distinguish ourselves from the usual Eurocentric and centralist initiatives. When we say Eurocentric initiative, we are not merely offering a critique but emphasizing the need to decentralize global migration governance through structures such as the GTFM,” he concluded.
