High-Level Visit from Syria and Lebanon to UCLG-MEWA


A high-level delegation from Syria and Lebanon recently paid a visit to the General Secretariat of the United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia (UCLG-MEWA). The delegation included Mohamad Saadie, UCLG-MEWA Honorary President; Wael Zmerly, UCLG-MEWA Co-President; and Ali Al-Hamad, Ministerial Representative for Local Administrations and Environment in Syria, along with his accompanying delegation.

During the visit, UCLG-MEWA Communications Officer Amir Lütfioğlu gave a detailed presentation about UCLG-MEWA’s mission, ongoing projects, and regional activities, highlighting the organization’s efforts to support local governance and sustainable development in the region.In addition, UCLG-MEWA Secretary General Mehmet Duman emphasized the importance of collaboration, underlining that strengthening regional partnerships remains a top priority.

Wael Zmerly, who was recently elected as UCLG-MEWA Co-President during the 2025 UCLG-MEWA Congress in Konya, expressed his commitment to actively contributing to the organization’s initiatives and fostering stronger collaboration among member cities.

The visit provided an opportunity for the delegations to engage directly with UCLG-MEWA and explore potential partnerships to advance local administration and various initiatives across the MEWA region.
