ICLEI 2026 Local Sustainability Award is Now Open

We are pleased to inform you that the call for applications for the ICLEI 2026 Local Sustainability Award is now open.

Organized by ICLEI Europe, the Award recognizes local and regional governments that are implementing transformative actions contributing to sustainable development.

The Award places a particular emphasis on system-level transformation, encouraging applications that go beyond isolated projects and demonstrate long-term, structural change in how sustainability challenges are addressed at the local level.

In this context, applicants are expected to present initiatives that contribute to one of the following transformation areas:

  • Structural change
  • Strengthening democracy
  • Governance innovation
  • Partnership models
  • Financial mechanisms
  • Attitudinal and behavioural change

Applicants are encouraged to ensure that their initiatives:

  • Contribute to systemic change beyond a single project or site,
  • Are implemented or coordinated at the local or regional level,
  • Demonstrate clear sustainability benefits,
  • Provide evidence of impact and tangible results,
  • Reflect long-term policy, governance, or institutional change.

Application Deadline: 23 April 2026

Award Ceremony: Date and location to be announced

Finalists will be invited to participate in the award ceremony.

The Award offers an opportunity for local governments to gain international visibility and to showcase their innovative approaches to sustainability.
