Culture, Tourism, and Technology Converge in Antalya: A Strategic Step for Culture and Tourism by UCLG-MEWA

The 10th Antalya Urbanism and Technologies Fair & Local Governments Symposium organized by the Union of Mediterranean Municipalities between April 18-20, under the theme “Environment and Humanity.” The event served as a valuable opportunity for municipalities to explore the latest technologies in the field of local governance and to build potential partnerships with private sector entities. The Local Governments Symposium, held within the framework of the exhibition, also garnered significant attention through its sessions focused on sharing knowledge and practical experience.

The UCLG-MEWA Committee on Culture and Tourism Meeting was held on April 19, 2025, with wide participation from local government representatives across the MEWA region. The meeting addressed the region’s rich cultural values and tourism potential and featured sessions discussing ways to enhance cultural cooperation and the exchange of best practices and experiences among relevant stakeholders.

Dr. Mehmet Duman, UCLG-MEWA Secretary General, emphasized that “The Committee on Culture and Tourism places many sensitive issues on its agenda, most notably the protection of cultural heritage and the support of creative cities in the fields of tourism and cultural diplomacy.”

Muhittin Böcek, Mayor of Antalya and President of the Union of Mediterranean Municipalities of Türkiye, stated: “We do not merely report on our work in the areas of smart cities, environment, and local governance—especially within the framework of the Committee on Culture and Tourism—but we also take responsibility for shaping the cities of the future.”

Various municipalities, associations, and private sector representatives opened booths at the exhibition, showcasing their products and services in areas such as sanitation, infrastructure development, energy, and e-governance. The UCLG-MEWA team visited the booths, distributed publications, and introduced UCLG-MEWA’s vision to participants.

The meeting is considered an important step in enhancing the visibility of the UCLG-MEWA Committee on Culture and Tourism in the region and in fostering opportunities for international cooperation.
