The fourth cycle of the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award), jointly led by UN-Habitat and China, is now open for applications. Cities worldwide are invited to apply by 12 June 2026.
The Shanghai Award is a global initiative designed specifically for cities to recognize outstanding progress in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda. As a pioneering global urban award, it assesses cities within their own unique contexts, taking into account their specific opportunities, challenges, resources, and capacities. Rather than direct comparison, it evaluates progress relative to each city’s own development trajectory, highlighting strategies, actions, and achievements over time through a holistic approach.
The overall theme of this cycle is “Building a Sustainable Urban Future for All.”
In line with this theme, the fourth cycle focuses on the following priority areas:
- Adequate housing for diverse needs
- Urban regeneration and improved human settlements
- Climate-resilient infrastructure
- Inclusive, multi-stakeholder urban governance
Applications are reviewed by an independent International Jury composed of geographically diverse experts. In each cycle, five winning cities are selected from different global regions, reflecting diverse contexts and demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable urban development.
Winning cities will be announced during World Cities Day 2026 (October 31, 2026) and will be awarded a certificate and trophy. Their good practices will be included in UN knowledge platforms and the Shanghai Manual 2026, and they will be invited to relevant international events, supporting knowledge exchange and global visibility.
Applications and guidelines are available here.
