On June 6, 2024, Abdurrahman Mustafa, Prime Minister of the Syrian Interim Government, visited the UCLG-MEWA General Secretariat to discuss potential collaboration on strengthening local governance, local government culture, and democracy in Syria.
Abdurrahman Mustafa, Prime Minister of the Syrian Interim Government, highlighted the importance of UCLG-MEWA, stating, “Empowering local governments will enable our people to participate more actively in democratic processes and will increase hope for Syria’s future.”
Prime Minister Mustafa emphasized that this collaboration opportunity will contribute to increasing the capacities of local governments in the region, thereby fostering long-term peace and stability. He also noted that briefing sessions where current data about Syria’s situation is shared have enabled local councils to develop strategies for adapting to these circumstances.
Dr. Mehmet Duman, Secretary General of UCLG-MEWA, stressed that the participation of local councils from northern Syria in UCLG-MEWA will enhance the capacities of local governments and improve the quality of life for citizens. He highlighted that potential collaborations will support local governments in the region, promoting long-term peace and stability.
UCLG-MEWA is contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals in the region through its cooperation and briefing activities aimed at strengthening local government culture and democracy.
